Health Insurance Coverage

Many extended health insurance plans provide coverage for psychotherapy and mental health services. At North Simcoe Therapy Network, we work with clients to make accessing and using their benefits as straightforward as possible.

Insurance plans vary considerably, so we encourage clients to understand their individual coverage before beginning services.

Is Psychotherapy Covered by Insurance?

Many workplace and private extended health benefit plans include coverage for mental health services. However, the amount of coverage and the types of professionals eligible for reimbursement depend on your specific plan.

Before booking, we recommend checking whether your plan covers services provided by a:

  • Registered Psychotherapist (RP)
  • Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) [RP(Q)]
  • Other regulated mental health professionals, where applicable

Some plans may only cover particular professional designations or may have different requirements depending on the clinician.

What Should I Ask My Insurance Provider?

When contacting your insurance company, consider asking:

“Does my plan cover psychotherapy services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO)?”

You may also want to confirm:

  • Your annual mental health benefit amount
  • The percentage reimbursed per appointment
  • Whether there is a maximum amount per session
  • Whether you have a deductible
  • Whether a physician’s referral is required
  • Whether virtual psychotherapy is covered
  • Whether your plan permits direct billing
  • Whether dependants have their own coverage limits

Knowing this information ahead of time can help prevent unexpected out-of-pocket expenses.

Direct Billing

NSTN offers direct billing through TELUS Health eClaims for many participating insurance providers.

When direct billing is available, eligible claims can be submitted to your insurer on your behalf. Depending on your coverage, your insurer may pay all or a portion of the session fee, with any remaining balance being the client’s responsibility.

Not all insurance companies or individual plans permit direct billing.

Direct Billing

If We Can’t Direct Bill Your Plan

You can still access services if your insurance provider does not participate in direct billing.

Following payment, you will receive a receipt containing the information required to submit your claim to your insurance company for reimbursement, subject to the terms of your plan.

NIHB & MNO

North Simcoe Therapy Network also has clinicians who are approved providers through Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) and the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO).

If you are accessing psychotherapy through one of these programs, please let us know when contacting the clinic so we can connect you with an appropriate provider.

No Insurance? We Have Options.

You don’t need private insurance to access therapy at NSTN.

Our Low-Cost Therapy Program provides appointments from $0–$75 per session based on financial need, helping make mental health support more accessible for individuals and families without adequate insurance coverage.
