For many people, the words “mental health” come with thoughts and images of clinically disordered people. People that are on medication may require hospitalization and perhaps long-term treatment. This is not an accurate picture of what mental health truly is. Yes, many people live with formally diagnosed mental illnesses. In fact, the numbers are staggering. And yes, their mental health is important. It is the mental health of the rest of the population that I would like to bring light to here.
Life is difficult. Not just for those with clinical depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety or other defined disorders but for everyone. People experience daily stressors with work, school, family, physical health, finances among a variety of other things. It is unavoidable. This is where “mental health” needs to be considered. Mental health means balance. It means living fully and in control. Sleeping well, eating well, exercising, nurturing spirituality, having meaningful activities and healthy relationships. The list goes on. For many, taking care of their mental health takes a back burner, when, arguably, it is the most important thing in one’s life.
Taking care of your mental health doesn’t have to cost a fortune. It can start with awareness. So take a moment and consider your mental health. Let’s get over the idea that mental health must relate to frightening and destructive problems. It is 2016, we’re well beyond that. Everyone has mental health issues so let’s face them and address them.
